Hang Christmas Lights on a Tree

Get into the spirit of the season and hang Christmas lights on various trees around your home. RDK Landscaping expert helpful advice on when and how to best install and store it.

Timing is everything

Please schedule your installation time in advance to avoid cold weather and additional risks the  ground is frozen or covered in snow ( Wonder, How are you going to remove snow on a drive way? Here are some tips. ). Late fall is ideal for hanging Christmas  lights after deciduous trees lose their leaves and before outdoor temperatures drop.

What type of lighting is best?

To avoid damage, electrical problems, and injury, make sure your lights are certified for outdoor  use. LED lighting is a preferred choice because it is more energy efficient than incandescent lights  have a long lifespan and a variety of color options. Find the light bulb at least 6 to 8 inches apart  to provide more light over a larger area.

How to hang Christmas lights

You will need:

  • Ladder
  • Outdoor lighting
  • Outdoor extension cord with ground circuit breaker protection for electric shock
  • Twine and/or gardener’s tape

Plan ahead

Decide how many lights you need and what type of look you want to achieve. White is a good  choice. If you want to light up all year round, strands of different colors or solid colors add some  ambience season. If you use colored light bulbs, choose a color that matches the exterior of your  home. Use the integrated palette.

Choose your tree

Plan how many lights to buy and choose the best trees in your yard to achieve your goal. Start with  a focal point, which may be the tallest tree or an interestingly shaped tree. Work from there, select  additional trees or shrubs to complete the look. Be mindful of your proximity to power source.

Lighting test

To avoid wasting time with a damaged or burned-out installation, check each light strand before  heading outdoors.

Find an assistant

Make safety, top priority and find an assistant to help stabilize the ladder as  climb up to reach higher branches.

Start from the bottom

The best way to hang Christmas lights is to start by securing an extension cord to the base of the  tree from bottom to top. To avoid overload, limit the number of strands in the tree to three. For a  more sophisticated look, wrap it around the trunk first and work your way up. The spacing between  each loop is also constant.

Safe lighting

Use twine, garden tape, or thread, or use twine or garden tape to secure the ends of the lights. Do not use power cords that may cause damage or injury.

Storage tips

You can save time and hassle by following these storage tips.

Wrap the light around a plastic hanger from end to end and tie the tail end to the hanger ring.

Using sturdy cardboard, place the notch on one side. From there, the lighting packaging begins. Continue along the length of the cardboard, tucking the ends in when you’re done.

RDK Tree Service removed a large maple by the power lines. It was definitely not a easy job. They did the job safely and did it rather quickly. I will definitely recommend them for your tree services.

I highly recommend them. Great crew, Super easy to work with. They’re doing a great job out here in East Amherst. Not only did I use them, but my neighbor and their son did as well and we couldn’t be happier.

I hope these pictures speak for itself. I had called couple of companies to my property in Northampton, Buffalo, but only RDK Landscaping had come out so quick to give a quote for a project we started and couldn’t finish. They were so quick, efficient and had completed the project in about 2 days. They did a beautiful job, and answered all my questions throughout the entire process. I am so very thrilled about the results and could not recommend more! They are doing wonderful projects.

RDK Landscaping did an amazing job! We had 8 dead ash trees at our property in Clarence that needed to be taken down given their proximity to the house and garage, in addition to two trees close to the power lines. I was very impressed with how quickly Roy and his team responded, came out to the property and got the job done. I would highly recommend them!

Everybody at RDK Landscaping was a pleasure to deal with, we had a big project with them to clear up some really overgrown gardens beds around our garage, they went above and beyond making our space useable again. Once the project was complete they made sure to clean everything up and even cleared some weeds we had on our driveway that we hadn’t even mention to them. Can’t recommend them enough and will be calling them first for any future landscaping projects.
