The Ultimate Guide to Snow Plowing: Tips and Tricks for Effective Winter Maintenance

Winter can bring a beautiful blanket of snow, but it also requires serious attention to keep roads, driveways, and parking lots clear. Snow plowing is an essential task for maintaining safety and accessibility during the winter months. Whether you’re a business owner, property manager, or homeowner with a large driveway, understanding the basics of snow plowing can make your winter maintenance more efficient. Here’s your ultimate guide to effective snow plowing.

Understand Your Plow Options

Straight blade plows: Ideal for smaller driveways and parking lots, straight blade plows are simple and effective for pushing snow straight ahead.

V-plows: Perfect for heavy snowfalls and large areas, V-plows can handle deep snow and can be adjusted to push snow to the side.

Wing plows: These plows expand the width of your clearing path and are useful for handling large volumes of snow and creating wider lanes.

Plan Your Snow Plowing Strategy
Assess your area: Before the snow starts, map out the areas you need to clear. Identify key zones like entrances, driveways, and high-traffic areas.

Develop a route: Create a plowing route that minimizes the number of times you cross over already-cleared areas. This helps in reducing the time spent and ensures all areas are covered efficiently.

Timing is Everything

Plow early and often: If possible, start plowing as soon as the snow begins to accumulate. This prevents snow from compacting and turning into ice, which is harder to remove.

Monitor weather reports: Keep an eye on weather forecasts to anticipate snowfall and plan your plowing schedule accordingly. Being prepared can help you stay ahead of snow accumulation.

Safety First
Check equipment: Regularly inspect your plow and vehicle to ensure they are in good working condition. Look for issues like worn blades or low fluid levels and address them before a storm hits.

Wear safety gear: When operating a plow, wear appropriate safety gear such as gloves, goggles, and a high-visibility vest to protect yourself and improve visibility.

Maintain Your Plow

Routine maintenance: Clean the plow blade after each use to prevent rust and buildup. Check for and replace any damaged parts to keep your plow in top shape.

Lubricate moving parts: Regularly lubricate joints and moving parts to ensure smooth operation and extend the life of your equipment.

Optimize Your Technique
Angle your blade: Adjust the angle of your plow blade based on the snow depth and type. For light snow, a straight angle works well, while for heavy or wet snow, a more aggressive angle might be needed.

Consider snow storage: Plan where you will pile the snow. Avoid placing it in areas where it might block driveways, sidewalks, or drainage systems.

Stay Informed and Prepared

Training: If you’re new to snow plowing, consider taking a training course or consulting with experienced operators. Proper techniques can make a significant difference in efficiency and safety.

Review and adjust: After each plowing session, review what worked well and what didn’t. Adjust your strategy as needed to improve your snow plowing operations.

Snow plowing is a critical part of winter maintenance that helps keep properties safe and accessible. By understanding your equipment, planning your strategy, and prioritizing safety, you can ensure that your snow plowing efforts are effective and efficient throughout the season.

I hope these pictures speak for itself. I had called couple of companies to my property in Northampton, Buffalo, but only RDK Landscaping had come out so quick to give a quote for a project we started and couldn’t finish. They were so quick, efficient and had completed the project in about 2 days. They did a beautiful job, and answered all my questions throughout the entire process. I am so very thrilled about the results and could not recommend more! They are doing wonderful projects.

RDK Landscaping did an amazing job! We had 8 dead ash trees at our property in Clarence that needed to be taken down given their proximity to the house and garage, in addition to two trees close to the power lines. I was very impressed with how quickly Roy and his team responded, came out to the property and got the job done. I would highly recommend them!

Everybody at RDK Landscaping was a pleasure to deal with, we had a big project with them to clear up some really overgrown gardens beds around our garage, they went above and beyond making our space useable again. Once the project was complete they made sure to clean everything up and even cleared some weeds we had on our driveway that we hadn’t even mention to them. Can’t recommend them enough and will be calling them first for any future landscaping projects.
