Mulching: What and Why?

mulch rdk landscaping

Mulching provides numerous benefits to your backyard, including controlling weeds, protecting plants from extreme temperatures, and improving soil quality.

What is mulch?

Mulch is made from decaying leaves, bark, and compost. It is very important for tree health as it helps regulate temperature and improve soil quality. The act of trimming and recutting grass to recycle the cut grass also forms mulch, and the cut grass is called mulch.

Why is mulching beneficial

Control weeds. Mulch acts as a barrier between weeds and sunlight and how much sunlight can penetrate.

It helps retain moisture. Mulch protects the soil from the sun to prevent evaporation. It also reduces water runoff during rain or watering. This reduces the amount of water needed and saves you money! Become a superhero who protects the environment and, as a bonus, saves water.

Improves the insulating properties of roots. Whether it’s a hot summer or a cold winter, mulch helps protect the roots of trees and plants in your backyard. Fragile seedlings and young trees that have not yet taken root especially benefit from this protection until they are strong enough to withstand extreme weather.

Soil quality improves. Mulching is good for the soil because it helps increase the biological activity of the soil by providing food for beneficial earthworms and microorganisms. It is also a good idea to bind sand or open clay soils together. During this process, the mulch itself breaks down, adding nutrients to the soil.

Saves time and effort. Recycling waste materials like grass clippings not only saves you money, but it also saves you the effort of getting rid of that waste. Protects trees and plants from mud splashes during heavy rain.
Beautiful. Mulch is known for its ability to add beauty and uniformity to landscape features. It makes old plants look new and adds neatness, precision and elegance to your landscape.

When should I mulch?

The right time to mulch your garden depends on the type of plant material you are mulching and weather conditions.

Mid to late spring is typically mulching season, which is also a time when the soil warms up from the freezing temperatures experienced throughout the winter. Doing this too early will slow the warming process needed for the soil to do its job. Mulching in late fall is also not recommended as it can insulate the ground and prevent plant dormancy. Hormant is the hibernation that plants need to survive the cold winter.

As with all gardening, the timing of mulching is very important to achieve all the desired benefits. It is also important to obtain good quality mulch to provide organic value to the soil.

RDK Tree Service removed a large maple by the power lines. It was definitely not a easy job. They did the job safely and did it rather quickly. I will definitely recommend them for your tree services.

I hope these pictures speak for itself. I had called couple of companies to my property in Northampton, Buffalo, but only RDK Landscaping had come out so quick to give a quote for a project we started and couldn’t finish. They were so quick, efficient and had completed the project in about 2 days. They did a beautiful job, and answered all my questions throughout the entire process. I am so very thrilled about the results and could not recommend more! They are doing wonderful projects.

RDK Landscaping did an amazing job! We had 8 dead ash trees at our property in Clarence that needed to be taken down given their proximity to the house and garage, in addition to two trees close to the power lines. I was very impressed with how quickly Roy and his team responded, came out to the property and got the job done. I would highly recommend them!

Everybody at RDK Landscaping was a pleasure to deal with, we had a big project with them to clear up some really overgrown gardens beds around our garage, they went above and beyond making our space useable again. Once the project was complete they made sure to clean everything up and even cleared some weeds we had on our driveway that we hadn’t even mention to them. Can’t recommend them enough and will be calling them first for any future landscaping projects.
